Medications & Supplements

  • Epsiprantel (Cestex®) is an oral deworming medication used to treat and kill tapeworms in dogs and cats. It comes as oral tablets that should be given with food. The medication typically takes effect within 1-2 days, but laboratory tests are needed to evaluate its effectiveness.

  • Erythromycin ophthalmic is an antimicrobial medication used to treat certain types of eye infections. It may be used “off label” or “extra label” to treat other eye conditions. Erythromycin ophthalmic comes in ointment form. Caution when using this medication in pocket pets as fatal diarrhea may occur if ingested orally.

  • Esomeprazole is a proton-pump inhibitor antacid used to treat stomach ulcers in cats, dogs, and horses. It is used off label (extra label) in veterinary medicine. Esomeprazole comes in capsule and tablet forms.

  • Estriol (brand name Incurin®) is a natural estrogen used to treat urinary incontinence and other diseases responsive to estrogen. Estriol is given by mouth in the form of a tablet or a compounded capsule, liquid tablet, or chewable tablet. This article discusses how this medication is given, potential side effects, risks, and monitoring.

  • Exenatide (brand names Bydureon®, Byetta®) is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist used in addition to insulin to achieve better blood sugar control and treat certain types of diabetes in cats. Its use is off label in veterinary medicine. Exenatide comes in an injectable immediate-release and extended-release forms – the forms are not interchangeable.

  • Felbamate is an anticonvulsant used to treat seizure disorders in dogs. It may be used when initial anticonvulsants are not effective or stop working. It is used off label (extra label) in veterinary medicine. Felbamate comes in tablet and liquid suspension forms.

  • Fenofibrate is a fibric acid derivative used as an anti-lipemic agent to lower triglycerides (a type of fat or lipid) in dogs. Its use in cats and other animals has not been studied. It is used off label (extra label) in veterinary medicine. Fenofibrate comes in capsule and tablet forms.

  • Fentanyl is an opioid medication used off-label to treat pain in cats and dogs. It is often given as an injection in hospital, but patches may be prescribed to deliver fentanyl transdermally (through the skin) for pets at home.   • Fipronil with cyphenothrin and s-methoprene, topical (brand name Frontline® Tritak for dogs), is a medication used to treat and control fleas, ticks, and chewing lice in dogs and puppies 12 weeks of age and older and weighing more than 1.8 kg (4 lb). It may also be used as a treatment of sarcoptic mange. Avoid use in rabbits, other small mammals, and cats.
