  • Pregabalin (brand name Lyrica®), is an anticonvulsant and neuropathic pain medication. It is used to treat refractory or complex partial seizures and chronic neuropathic pain in small animals. It has been used to treat other types of pain in cats and dogs. It is used "off label" or "extra label" in animals. Pregabalin comes in capsule or liquid suspension form.

  • Pro-Pectalin™ is a digestive health and probiotic supplement used in cats and dogs. It contains kaolin, pectin, and probiotic bacteria to help maintain a balanced microbial flora, promote intestinal health, and support normal digestive function.

  • Psyllium combination supplements (e.g., DiaGel®) are used in cats and dogs to help control diarrhea and constipation. They contain psyllium seed husks and other natural products that help restore normal bowel movements. Psyllium combination supplements come in powder and liquid gel form (pre-measured syringes).

  • Psyllium fiber capsules (brand name Vetasyl®) are fiber supplements used in cats and dogs to help promote bowel health. Vetasyl contains psyllium seed husks and barley malt extract powder contained in gelatin capsules.

  • Pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy is the use of a generated electromagnetic field to affect changes in tissues of the body. PEMF is believed to have beneficial pain-relieving and healing effects but definitive clinical evidence or a positive benefit is currently lacking. Potential benefits and contraindications are discussed.

  • Pyrethrins + piperonyl butoxide + bicycloheptene dicarboximide otic (brand name Otomite Plus®) is a medication used to treat ear mites in dogs and cats older than 12 weeks of age. Pyrethrins + piperonyl butoxide + bicycloheptene dicarboximide otic comes in a liquid drop form. It is highly toxic to aquatic species and toxic to cats if ingested.

  • Quality of life is a way to refer to and discuss the day-to-day life and lifestyle of a cat reaching the end of its life. A quality-of-life scale for cats can help owners and veterinarians work together to maintain a healthy human-animal bond. The scale looks at seven different categories including hurt, hunger, hydration, hygiene, happiness, mobility, more good days than bad. The scale can help clarify the decisions and anxiety related to your cat’s end of life care.

  • Rawhide-based oral hygiene chews are chews with an abrasive texture that can help prevent or delay the formation of dental plaque and calculus build-up on your pet’s teeth. C.E.T.® Enzymatic Oral Hygiene Chews is one common brand.
